mahakarya_introThe Aksobya open air theatre of Borobudur hosts a very special Javanese dance event once each year in June.

The Mahakarya is the story behind the conception of the temple through to the construction, interweaving the stories of the Saliendra dynasty and local life of the 8th Century.

200 performers in traditional costumes with a full gamelan orchestra to provide music are completed with a backdrop of a temple lightshow.

This is a contemporary piece, the result of a collaboration between local communities, dancers from Solo’s Art School and historians.

Gold class seating 600 000 Rupiah
Silver class seating 400 000 Rupiah
